Annual Peter B. Mathews Honorary Irish Person of the Year Breakfast will be held this year on Friday, March 16th, at the Best Western Plus, 503 Washington Ave., Kingston, starting at 7:00am.

It is a light-hearted and beloved Kingston tradition, and those selected as the Honorary Irish Person of the Year have gone down in history as men and women who stand apart from the crowd.

The list of winners throughout the years dates back to the late Anthony Pizzarelli of Ulster Tool and Die, who was named the first Honorary Irishman in 1970.

Others include Bob Deitrick, a local banker in 1975; Realtor Joan Isgro in 1984; Tony Marmo, former Kingston Hospital CEO in 1996; Jack Young of the YMCA in 2001;
Ian Horowitz of J & A Roofing in 2004; Jim Bracco from Camper’s Barn in 2008; Sandy Henne of Hudson River Cruises in 2010; Cheryl Bowers from Rondout Savings Bank in 2016 and last year, Clayton Van Kleeck of Van Kleeck’s Tire.

“The Chamber of Commerce and our members look forward to this very special event every year,” according to Chamber President Ward Todd.

“For nearly a half century now, our Peter B. Mathews Honorary Irish Person of the Year Breakfast has brought together Chamber members and the Ulster County business community for a day of pure fun and enjoyment. We have outstanding music, bagpipers and a delicious Irish breakfast, including green orange juice. It has become an Ulster County tradition like no other.”

Now in its 49th year, the breakfast was started by the late Len Cane, the former and longtime Chamber president.

The gist of it is that the recipient must be a remarkable community leader —someone who goes out of his or her way to make the area a better place to live.
The breakfast will feature entertainment from the Kingston Lions Club Roarin’ Pride Band and the Ulster County Ancient Order of Hibernians Pipes and Drums.

All attendees will receive a complimentary green carnation from J & A Roofing Company in Kingston.

Admission is $25 for Chamber members and $35 for non-members. Payment is due in advance. For more information, call the Chamber at (845) 338-5100 or go to www.UlsterChamber.org.
